About the Craft and Artisan:
Rekha Sinha established the non-profit organization 'Rekhaakriti' in 2014 with the aim of enhancing income-generating opportunities for artisans in rural and tribal areas. Rekhaakriti focuses on preserving traditional art and handicrafts in Uttar Pradesh and providing livelihoods to self-trained and underprivileged local artisans. Starting with 10 artisans, Rekhaakriti now has 250 artisans who create over 300 products, including wooden toys, moonj products, and home decor items. Moonj, made from the outer layer of 'Sarpat' grass, is used for basketry-making by women using traditional coiling techniques. The grass is dried, made into knots called 'Balla,' soaked in water for flexibility, and then coiled to form the base and walls of the basket. Motif patterns are added using colored grass, and handles are stitched to make the baskets sturdy. The range of products includes vanity cases, round baskets, containers, earrings, fruit baskets, and hand purses, all of which are simple, attractive, and eco-friendly. The toys are made of solid wood, making them durable and biodegradable, and they don't contain harmful chemicals found in plastic toys. These toys include sets of dolls, birds, animals, musicians, candle holders, trays, and photo frames, providing attractive and safe playthings for children
