Putul Crafts was established in 1985 by Sheela Choudhury. She shares an interesting journey of 50 years with the art of doll making, of how she developed a childhood hobby into the refined craft of creating cloth dolls .The dolls are made out of waste material by the skilled artisans from Delhi.
Sheelaji lives and works in Delhi. She has trained a group of young girls from the nearby slums and they create the basic structure for the dolls. Woods, jute, bottle caps, broken Plastic balls, lemon peels, woolen thread, thermocol, broken bangles, match sticks, plastic bottles, ribbon, lace and colorful fabric waste material are used to make the Putul dolls. Time consumed in the making process is 2 to 3 hours. The products are made for kids such as dolls, doll houses and keychains. Sheela ji attends to the finer details herself.
Her exposure to different forms of craft, music and culture during her two-year study at Shantiniketan, created an artistic sensitivity which lies at the core of her finished products. She has had varied experiences from teaching Indian craft practices in Iraq to holding doll exhibitions at the Delhi Haat.
