Kalamkari is the art of using a pen to draw beautiful designs with natural dyes on cloth. It has a history that dates back to 2600BC. Kalamkari cloth samples were found in Mohenjodaro excavations and in the tombs at Al Fusat in Cairo. It has transformed from being a pen (qalam) art to becoming a block art, due to increased demand. Currently Block print form of Kalamkari is produced in Pedana, Andhra Pradesh. Venkata Bhanu Textiles has preserved the laborious seven-stage traditional, non-mechanised process of production. The dyes used are all natural and extracted from trees and plants. The process also involves washing in running water canals, boiling using natural ingredients for new color development and drying under bright sun. Kalamkari product range varies from sarees, fabric, dress material, dupattas, carpets, bedsheets to other ready-made items.

Venkata Bhanu Textiles is a firm that manufactures a wide range of block print Kalamkari textiles. It is incorporated under the tutelage of Sri Bhatta Mohan Rao, one of the champions in the revival of this handicraft in the post-colonial era.

The blocks that they use for printing are procured from the National Award winner Sri Kondra Gangadhar. Venkat Bhanu works with a collective of around 50 skilled artisans who specialize in various aspects of production of a Kalamkari textile product.
