Ashar Ram was born in 1963 in a family of farmers at Qaziwala village, Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh. Asha Ram worked in the fields with his father as a child and later took to woodcraft to earn additional income. The craft turned into a passion for young Asha Ram. Asha Ram is a master craftsman and a successful entrepreneur. He leads Asha Handicrafts- a group of about 30 specialized artisan woodcarvers. He has been instrumental in teaching and passing on this craft to many including his two sons.
This seemed natural, as this sheesham wood rich region is a prime center of woodcraft from the Mughal times. He trained and worked under the guidance of master artist Abdul Salam for nearly a decade. Practicing the craft for nearly 30 years, Asha Ram has mastered the technique of jali (net for latticed screen)work, carving and inlay in wood among other things. He makes finely crafted combs and has devised an enthralling range of games. He also crafts other wooden objects such as boxes, bangles, jewelry, keychains, coasters made in sheesham, Indian rosewood and denser ebony wood.
