Akil Khan weaves Handmade Panja Dari/Carpet with a group of artisans from the past 20 years at Mirzapur. They have around 35 artisans who make panja dari including his family members. They are specialized in weaving Panja Dari, Irani film, afgani work and all kinds of carpets and  these carpets are also known for their fairly bold colors and patterns.

Panja weaving is a part of India’s glorious weaving tradition. This craft is used mostly for making light woven rugs, and it gets its iconic name from a metallic claw-like tool called ‘panja’. This tool is a bit heavy and used for beating the weft threads in wrap so as to adjust them there and the beating is directly proportional to the stability of the rug. The artisans do experiments with stripes, geometrical and stylized natural forms such as the kangasi (comb), teer (arrow head), tota (parrot), chidia (sparrow) and chaukadi (rhombus). Variously colored yarns are laboriously individually inserted to create these forms, thus also ensuring that the durries are reversible.

Panja dari are woven in a weft faced plain weave on simple horizontal looms. Woolen yarns are mostly used; this gives them a sturdy and flat appearance. The mix of traditional and contemporary designs is evidence of a high degree of workmanship. The uniqueness of handmade panja dari lies in the fact that the whole process is entirely manual, starting from designing and weaving to finishing.
