Pune-based social enterprise Ecokaari focuses on humanising fashion. Founded by Nandan Bhat, it is based on three pillars of sustainable development.
They work on conserving the environment, by 'upcycling' non-biodegradable and difficult-to-recycle plastic bags, grocery bags, multi-layered wrappers of cookies, chips and glittery gift wraps and old audio/video cassette tapes. Till date, Ecokaari has upcycled more than 12,00,000 waste plastic bags and saved them from going into landfills and oceans.
They also upcycle waste plastic into beautiful handcrafted fabrics using the charkha and loom. These fabrics are handcrafted by rural and tribal women and youth. Their aim is to innovate and present sustainable alternatives by pairing traditional Indian crafts with upcycled fabrics in contemporary designs.
